Safeguarding & eSafety

What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined as

  • Protecting children from maltreatment
  • Preventing impairment of children’s health or development
  • Ensuring children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
  • Taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes

At The Salesian Academy of St. John Bosco, we are committed to creating and maintaining a safe learning environment for children and young people, identifying where there are child welfare concerns and taking action to address them, in partnership with families and other agencies.

As a school, our safeguarding policy is compliant with the 2021 updated Keeping Children Safe in Education DFE statutory guidance, which can be found here.

Early Help

What is Early Help?

Early Help is about taking action as soon as possible to tackle problems for children and families before they can grow into something that is more difficult to overcome. It is about identifying children and families that may be at risk of running into difficulties and providing timely and effective support.

There will be times when children and families need support and times they are not sure what they need to do to make things better. Early Help can support them at these times and make problems easier to understand and quicker to solve.

It can lead to a quick solution or help to identify extra support if needed. Having an Early Help action plan in place will ensure that everyone involved with the child and family – such as teachers and health visitors – work together to provide support.

If you are experiencing difficulties or challenges as a family and would like to explore whether Early Help would benefit your family please call school and speak to Mrs Lisa Howe (Pastoral Care & Standards Leader) who can discuss this with you.

Removing an image online

Just to make you aware the Internet Watch Foundation and Child Line have launched a ‘Report Remove’ tool which will allow children to report if a naked image of them has appeared online and get this removed.

The tool can be accessed via this link: https://www.childline.org.uk/info-advice/bullying-abuse-safety/online-mobile-safety/remove-nude-image-shared-online/

CEOP 11-18's Website Toolkit

To sit alongside their new website, CEOP have updated their 11-18’s toolkit to support the use of the website as an effective learning resource for young people. This replaces the ‘Thinkuknow toolkit’, which is no longer available to download.

The toolkit includes activities that can be delivered as one-off lessons or used as part of young people’s relationships and sex education.

The activities cover specific topics (such as healthy friendships and nude image sharing) and the independent exploration of the website.

To help you plan, the toolkit contains:

Comprehensive guidance for delivering the activities safely and effectively in school and youth work settings.

Recommendations on how to make the content suitable for group discussion with two different age groups – young people aged 11-13 or 14+.

Alternative and extension activities to help you choose the best approach to use with your young people.
